We had a wonderful gathering and were blessed with a beautiful day for our first Biddlecombe Society lunch of the year, held at the Sorrento Couta Boat Club on Thursday 27 March.

Rebecca Cody, Principal, was in attendance together with Richard and Janet Southby who, as members of the Biddlecombe Society, were visiting from Washington DC. Flora Gillies (Ga’24) kindly agreed to speak about her experiences at Geelong Grammar School as a scholarship recipient. Flora gave an excellent insight into her six-year journey and the opportunities that were given to her as a result of her scholarship – opportunities that she said would not have been possible without the kindness of others, for which she was eternally grateful. It was very special to hear that through her educational journey at Geelong Grammar School, Flora departs Australia later this year to study English Literature at Oxford University. Vanessa Mahon, Chair of the Foundation, was in attendance to present three members with their pins.

The occasion was also an opportunity to mark Charlie Sutherland’s final event as Chairman of the Biddlecombe Society ahead of the conclusion of his tenure at the AGM in May. Rebecca Cody informed the gathering that following the AGM in May, Jim Gall (Cu’91) would be taking over the role of Chairman. Charlie was thanked for his dedication and passion to the ‘light blue’ over the past seven years and Jim was congratulated on his appointment. Rebecca also remarked that the bequest programme and Biddlecombe Society’s continued success should be attributed to Charlie’s strong leadership and this was celebrated by all present.
